Hi I’m Harry Banks…

Every Picture Has a Story

I've been fortunate to call Alaska home for more than forty years. Even after all this time, it continues to surprise me with remarkable wildlife, extraordinary landscapes, and unexpected moments that reveal the character of the Last Frontier. I believe every photograph has a story waiting to be shared.

Photography first became part of my life as a freelance photographer in the Washington, D.C., area during the 1960s. Life eventually led me in a different direction, including a long career teaching computer networking, but my desire to create images never disappeared. In 2023, a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park inspired me to pick up a camera again. What began as a single adventure became the beginning of an entirely new chapter in my life.

Today, I'm interested in much more than beautiful landscapes. My photographs capture encounters—with bears, birds, whales, mountains, Alaska Native culture, and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. Every image is paired with a personal story because I want you to experience not only what I saw, but also what I felt when I pressed the shutter.

This website is my invitation to slow down, look closely, and discover the stories Alaska and it’s people have shared with me. I hope these photographs encourage you to see this remarkable place with fresh eyes, remember adventures of your own, and perhaps even discover a favorite story along the way.

At 82 years old, I believe the greatest adventures don't always happen at the beginning of life—they can begin with the decision to start again.

I’d love to hear from you…
