The Copper River can be a busy place when fishermen are cleaning their catch.
At O'Brien Creek near Chitina, gulls swarmed the fish scraps while a bald eagle waited for an opportunity to claim a meal of its own. The eagle may have been larger, but one determined gull had other plans.
As the eagle swept in, the gull launched a relentless aerial attack, diving from above and chasing the intruder away. What followed was a fast-moving contest of courage and persistence, played out against the Alaskan sky.
This triptych captures the unfolding drama: the approach, the confrontation, and the retreat.
The eagle wanted dinner.
The gull had a different message:
"Get outa here!"
