What’s Next
What's Next?
For decades, photography was part of my past.
In the 1960s, I worked as a freelance photographer in the Washington, D.C., area, but life eventually carried me in other directions. Cameras were set aside, careers changed, and the years slipped by.
Then, in July 2023, I traveled to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park hoping to photograph bears. What I expected was a wildlife adventure. What I found was something much more personal.
This young bear was completely focused on the task at hand—eating enough salmon to survive the winter ahead. Then, for a brief moment, he stood upright and looked out across the river. To me, he seemed to be asking a simple question:
"What's next?"
The question lingered long after the encounter ended. In many ways, it was my question too.
That moment rekindled a lifelong passion and opened a new chapter in my life—one that is still unfolding today.
Bring This Encounter Home
The adventure doesn't have to end here.
If this young bear made you stop and smile, you can bring that moment home.
