Tail Spash

POOOWOOSH!

The explosive sound shattered the silence of an Alaskan summer morning. At 5:00 a.m., I stood alone on the rocky shore outside my cabin on Prince of Wales Island, surrounded by the golden stillness of Coffman Cove. Then the water came alive.

A humpback whale rose from the quiet sea, powerful yet graceful, before slowly disappearing beneath the surface. For a few unforgettable seconds, it felt as if the entire cove belonged only to the whale and me.

As the great tail lifted for one final goodbye, the morning sun transformed the falling water into a curtain of liquid gold. Moments like this can’t be planned—they are gifts from the wild.

Long after the ripples faded, the wonder of that early morning encounter remains.
